The Nigerian military said it thwarted an attack Wednesday on navy vessels guarding the country's main crude-oil and liquefied natural gas export terminal at Bonny Island.
"The attack was successfully repelled," Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, a military spokesman in the Niger Delta, said today in a phone interview today. Export facilities weren't damaged, he said.
Two gunboats carrying militants were sunk while four others escaped, Musa said. "Many militants are suspected to have died," he said, adding no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Attacks by armed groups in the Niger Delta, Nigeria's main oil-producing region, have cut more than 20 percent of the country's crude exports since 2006. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the main militant group in the region, announced a cease-fire last month.
Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Total SA and Eni SpA are partners with state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., in the production and export of LNG from Bonny Island. Shell also operates a crude-oil export terminal at Bonny.
